In 2025, Spread the Word turned 30. In December of that year, with a desire to raise the profile of the organisation and reach more storytellers, Spread the Word became London Writers Centre.
We are still working towards the same vision. We’ve spent three decades nurturing writers, championing unheard voices and making literature accessible to all, and that’s not about to change.
Explore Commissions
Across our 30th anniversary year, we commissioned nine London-based emerging, D/deaf and disabled writers and LGBTQI+ writers to create new work. The pieces were shared at Deptford Literature Festival in 2025 and 2026.
The D/ deaf and Disabled Writer Commissions were open to writers facing disabalist and/ or audist barriers.
The LGBTQI+ Writer Commissions were open to early stage writers.
The Emerging Writer Commissions were open to unagented and unpublished writers from underrepresented backgrounds.
Each programme offered mentoring and support to the commissioned writers to develop their work, as well as career development opportunities.
