In 2025, Spread the Word turned 30. In December of that year, with a desire to raise the profile of the organisation and reach more storytellers, Spread the Word became London Writers Centre.
We are still working towards the same vision. We’ve spent three decades nurturing writers, championing unheard voices and making literature accessible to all, and that’s not about to change.
Explore Commissions
To mark the start of our 30th anniversary, we commissioned writers emerging and d/Deaf and disabled writers to create new work. The pieces were shared at Deptford Literature Festival in March 2025.
The d/Deaf and Disabled Writer Commissions were open to writers facing disabalist and/ or audist barriers.
The Emerging Writer Commissions were open to unagented and unpublished writers from underrepresented backgrounds.
Each programme offered mentoring and support to the commissioned writers to develop their work, as well as career development opportunities.
