Our objectives:
London Writers Centre acknowledges the climate crisis and is committed to operating in an ethical and environmentally responsible manner. We recognise that organisations can negatively impact the environment, and are therefore committed to finding ways in which these impacts can be reduced. Our policy also aims to increase environmental awareness and action on the climate crisis amongst staff, our Board of Trustees, our freelance tutors, our volunteers and our audience.
Our impacts:
We are committed to reducing the negative environmental impacts of our own activities and that of our audience, in particular those relating to:
- Our office: waste, energy use, IT, printing and the goods and services we choose.
- Our programme of work: including marketing and communications, waste, energy use, catering, business and audience travel.
Our commitments:
As a resident organisation of the Albany we can influence but not directly control the water and energy usage of the building. However we are still able to control understanding and communication of our own directly attributable environmental performance. We also seek to engage all staff members, the Board of Trustees and our audience in this process. Our key areas of focus are:
- Recycling office waste such as paper, plastics, computer supplies and redundant equipment.
- Considering environmental and ethical decisions when selecting suppliers and services for our operations, especially stationary, household goods and furniture.
- Ensuring all users of our office spaces are informed and aware of our Environmental Policy and Plan and their responsibilities when making use of our facilities.
- Reducing the impacts of business travel and especially encouraging our audience, staff, volunteers and freelance tutors to use zero or low-carbon travel methods e.g. walking, cycling, public transport.
- Reducing impact of food and catering wastage, through ordering appropriately and recycling and redistributing where possile.
- Supporting the efforts of the Albany in minimising the environmental impact of our office premises and shared resident facilities in the building.
This policy is reviewed on an annual basis by our Board of Trustees and updated where necessary. The policy is supported by an Environmental Action Plan which is also reviewed on an annual basis.
