Momtaza Mehri, former Young People’s Laureate for London, reads the poem we commissioned to mark the 30th anniversary of London Writers Centre.

Disrespect

Written by: Jacqueline Codrington

Rockstone. You thought you could give
me this to eat — fresh chicken, salty pigtail
and tough rice. I could tell from the colour
of the rice, the tin poured the peas. Not a trace
of coconut milk. Imagine, I wasn’t even worthy
of your time to cook a proper meal.

‘Disrespect’ was published in the Mouth Mek Fi Nyam Anthology, featuring original poems and short stories from Caribbean elders.
