Disrespect

Written by: Jacqueline Codrington

Rockstone. You thought you could give
me this to eat — fresh chicken, salty pigtail
and tough rice. I could tell from the colour
of the rice, the tin poured the peas. Not a trace
of coconut milk. Imagine, I wasn’t even worthy
of your time to cook a proper meal.

‘Disrespect’ was published in the Mouth Mek Fi Nyam Anthology, featuring original poems and short stories from Caribbean elders.

Their hair is pushed back by sunglasses, and they are wearing a black sleeveless top with silver chains around their neck. They are outside and the sky behind them is nearly white, the tree in the background leaf-less.
