The Salon is for d/Deaf and disabled creatives – whether you are new to writing or are a seasoned and published poet, gain inspiration and start a new ongoing adventure in creativity.

You’ll be asked to provide your contact details and a short bio and the reading you will be doing which should be no longer than 5 minutes. This is so we can send the work to our BSL interpreters in advance of the session. You can submit these in written English, video or audio file format.

About the workshop

This workshop will explore how rhythm and rhyme can be used to create writing that is designed to be performed, whether as spoken word or part of a theatre piece. We will explore how poetry can enhance depictions of setting and character, and ways of bringing your work to broader audiences. For all levels of experience, from first-time scribes to seasoned writers. Session includes an open mic sharing of our work.

About Jessica
Jess Clark is a writer, performer and workshop facilitator based in North London. Her work is rooted in the rhythms of rhymed poetry, often exploring the interactions between sociopolitical phenomena and inner emotional experience. She has been performing poetry for over ten years, starting as an undergraduate at Durham University before migrating to London’s spoken word scene. Jess’ writing for stage includes Snakes and Ladders, a one-woman poetry-play about the foster care system, and East to West, a full-length poetry-play exploring the development of a queer relationship in contemporary London. Her new play, A Shattered Mosaic, will premiere at The Camden Fringe this August. As well as working in youth mental health support and education, Jess has facilitated creative writing workshops at organisations including The Pret Foundation and Freedom From Torture. She holds a first-class honours BA in English Literature and Spanish, and a distinction-grade PGCert in Teaching Creative Writing from the University of Cambridge.
